Don't believe it. A good (new) phillips head screwdriver works just fine. Just make sure that the screwdriver blade is a good tight fit and you won't have any problems. After you finish removing the white spacer, replace the phillips head screws with either regular slotted screws or allen (hex) head screws and you'll be in good shape.
